Boxboard Price Trend Analysis 2026: Price Drivers, Supply Demand Analysis, Historical Prices, Latest News & Market Insights
Boxboard Price Trend 2025
The boxboard market saw significant pressures during 2025, driven by factors including declining raw material availability and capacity reductions. Prices for recovered fibre, one of the key raw materials for recycled boxboard products, fell to very low levels during the period. The supply side saw significant movements as several major players announced plans to close and idle capacities, leading to a decline in annual production capacities across the industry. These declines were seen across both virgin and recycled boxboard products and were part of the industry’s efforts to rationalize capacities in response to weakening demand.
The demand side saw weakening demand throughout much of the year, with domestic consumption remaining below expectations. Import volumes of recovered fibre saw declines as well, with the introduction of tariffs on recyclable material imports from key trading partners impacting cross-border trade. In India, regulatory dynamics, including the introduction of a minimum import price on virgin multi-layer paperboard and GST rate revisions, made things more complicated for procurement decisions and put significant pressure on working capital for the packaging industry.

The price graph of boxboard recorded considerable fluctuations in the second half of 2024. The demand situation remained stagnant in this period, as the market was still in recovery from a prolonged inventory correction that had impacted demand in previous quarters. E-commerce activity offered a measure of support to corrugated and boxboard demand. On the supply side, consolidation among key market players continued, with mill rationalisation efforts including planned downtime and capacity reduction. This had a slightly positive impact on the supply-demand balance. Raw material costs, such as those of recovered fibre, remained high, affecting mill profitability. Market sentiment was also influenced by early discussions on import duty policy, which added a further level of complexity to market dynamics towards the close of the year.
In the second quarter of 2024, boxboard prices in North America increased as producers responded to inflationary pressures and rising production costs. The feedstock wood pulp and paper prices were on the rise, which directly impacted the upstream dynamics for boxboards as well. Even though demand remained mixed and supply levels were high. Boxboards, widely used in packaging, printing, and protective applications across industries such as consumer goods and e-commerce, experienced upward price adjustments driven by efforts to recover from earlier market declines and stabilize conditions.
While there were slight improvements in order volumes and shipment times, demand remained relatively soft, leading some buyers to question the need for price hikes amid ample supply. Despite these challenges, the industry showed signs of adapting, with moves like the acquisition of Columbia Corrugated Box by SupplyOne highlighting ongoing efforts to consolidate and navigate the evolving market landscape.
Boxboard is a type of paperboard known for its durability, strength, and smooth surface, making it ideal for packaging and folding cartons. Its primary characteristics include high stiffness, good printability, and excellent foldability, allowing it to be used in a wide range of packaging applications.
Market drivers for boxboards include the rising demand for sustainable packaging solutions, growth in e-commerce, and increasing consumer preference for packaged goods. Additionally, advancements in packaging technology and the need for high-quality printing for branding purposes further boost the demand for boxboards in various industries.
During the first quarter of 2024, the US packaging companies experienced continued challenges with low volumes. This trend was influenced by sustained low demand and tight order patterns across most regions globally, signaling ongoing challenges in the market.
The slowdown of the packaging sector was well evident in the southward movement of boxboard prices as the market struggled to balance the supply-demand dynamics. The manufacturers of the commodity looked for specific measures in order to deal with this imbalance and, as a result, reduced their production volumes by almost 2%. This stimulus was yet to showcase any effect on the pricing trajectory during the first quarter of 2024.
