Methyl Ethyl Ketones play a significant role in its production and thus substantially dictate its market behavior along with the demands from the downstream perfume and flavor industries. The year 2023 began with ample availability of alpha-isomethyl ionone in the inventories. It does not occur in nature and is produced synthetically. It has orris, floral, and woody odour. It is used in perfumery as a bridge between the middle and base notes. It is extensively used in the preparation of floral fragrances, particularly violet.

Alpha-isomethyl ionone Production Processes

To produce Alpha-isomethyl ionone, Pseudo Ionone undergoes a cyclisation reaction in the presence phosphoric acid & toluene. Toluene is used as a solvent to form crude alpha ionone (AI). The crude product is then subjected to distillation to obtain high purity Methyl Ionone. During distilalation, the solvent is recycled for the next batch.
